Perfect match: Sierra Nevada and Bavarian State Brewery Weihenstephan

Freising, 17 January 2018 – A joint-venture project by two allied master brewers from the old and the new world of brewing topped tuesday’s agenda at the Bavarian State Brewery Weihenstephan. The oldest brewery in the world is partnering with Sierra Nevada, craft beer pioneers from the USA, to produce a fruity, hoppy wheat beer named Braupakt (The Brewers’ Pact). Scott Jennings, head brewmaster at Sierra Nevada, had personally travelled over to launch the brewing process side by side with Weihenstephan’s head brewmaster, Tobias Zollo. What makes this wheat beer so special is its combination of the venerable Hallertauer Tradition hop strain with aromatic US Amarillo and Chinook hops to create a sophisticated beer that is truly a “perfect match”.

 “This project is a meeting of the new world and the old world, with Sierra Nevada and the Bavarian State Brewery Weihenstephan as two cornerstones of the world of beer”, announced Marcus Englet, Export Director at Weihenstephan, as he launched the brewing process for the joint-venture project. Before the aromatic Amarillo hops were added, the two master brewers explained how the collaboration had come about and what makes it so special. “The collaboration with Weihenstephan is a unique experience offering us the opportunity to work with such a historic and traditional brewery, and we’re very honoured to be part of the project. Our breweries share the same values”, affirmed Scott Jennings, outlining the venture. “Both of our breweries have quality as their top priority. We’re combining time-honoured tradition with new, exciting styles of beer”, added Tobias Zollo. Both experts were convinced that the choice of hop varieties was the essence in creating this special beer. Based on aromatic Chinook and Amarillo hops, Braupakt wheat beer will be hoppier than classic beers of this kind, with a subtle, elegant note of bitterness. As Marcus Englet explained, the background to the joint venture was “our desire to show that we can do more than brewing traditional beers. We spent a long time searching for a brewery that shared our values. Now we’ve found the perfect partner in Sierra Nevada – with colleagues we can learn from and gain fresh inspiration.” In fact, learning from each other has been the project’s key philosophy throughout. Scott Jennings is impressed by the perfectionism and the high quality of the technical equipment in Germany, while Weihenstephan is enthusiastic about the culture of openness at the US brewery. Tobias Zollo welcomed the view that both partners can learn from one another, setting all ideas of rivalry aside. As an aside, he also commented that the USA is far ahead of Germany when it comes to hopping. On that note, the national and international media representatives headed for the brewhouse, where Scott Jennings and Tobias Zollo ceremoniously added the aromatic Amarillo hops. Braupakt wheat beer will be available in March.

Tasting details: This naturally cloudy amber Hefeweizen has a firm, creamy head and reveals fragrances of peach, apricot and citrus on the nose. The initial impression on the palate is of a bouquet of aromas, including subtle touches of banana plus refreshing grapefruit from the American Chinook hops. The fruity peach and apricot notes from the Amarillo hops are balanced by the gentle sweetness of the caramel malt. The beer has a delicate tartness that melds into a harmonious mouthfeel on the finish.
