The expert team of the European Beer Star decided: our Weihenstephan Vitus and Hefeweissbier Dunkel were awarded the highest honors in their respective categories. Gold went to the Weizenbock Vitus and Silver to our Dark Wheat Beer.
Weihenstephan Vitus has been convincing experts of international competitions for many years and was able to successfully defend its title with another Gold Medal at the European Beer Star this year. The Weizenbock can be said to be the golden boy among the beers of the Bavarian State Brewery Weihenstephan, also winning Gold at this year´s World Beer Awards. For the Weihenstephan Hefeweissbier Dunkel it was the first prize to be won at the European Beer Star. The Silver Medal marks the end of a very successful year: this year the beer also won Bronze at the World Beer Awards in the UK and Silver at the Australian International Beer Awards.
The figures behind the European Beer Star competition mean that the success of the Bavarian State Brewery Weihenstephan is even more impressive: 2,344 beers from 51 countries of every continent were registered for the competition. Never has it been such a challenge to win an award. Once again, the number of participants saw a dramatic 9 percent increase compared with the previous year.
Tasting panels consisting of international beer experts met at the brewing academy “Brauakademie Doemens” in Gräfelfing: over two days 144 beer experts from 32 countries tasted and judged more than 65 beer styles of European brewing methods. The beers are evaluated using only the senses as criteria, just as consumers do: appearance, foam, aroma, taste and special flavors depending on the beer style.
In 2018 the European Beer Star was in its fifteenth year. The competition is one of the toughest worldwide and awards prizes to extraordinary, authentic beers that excel for their taste and quality. For each category there are just three prizes: Gold, Silver and Bronze. “The European Beer Star has long become a showcase for the best beers in the world“, says Oliver Dawid, Managing Director of the organizer, Private Brauereien Bayern (which may be translated as Private Breweries Bavaria).
Both medals are a huge success for the Head Brewmaster of the Bavarian State Brewery Weihenstephan, Tobias Zollo: “We are very proud to have won two distinguished awards at such a prestigious competition. It is welcomed appreciation for the high quality of our beers and acknowledgement of the high standards achieved by the employees of our brewery.
